Assignment
Conversion of an existing longhouse with a solid timber extension

Specification
The planned one storey extension will be built on an existing foundation slab using a light, solid timber construction. In a new terminus to the long house typography, the building structure breaks away from parallelism and in doing so highlights the special feature of this type of building. The use of timber is an essential component of the design. Painted black on the exterior, the extension creates a seemingly sculptural contrast to the bright, two storey longhouse. In the interior of the extension, timber stands in atmospheric cohabitation with the exposed concrete and the existing sand-lime brick wall. The living area opens out generously into the garden, whereas the sleeping area with bathroom and sauna overlooks the interior courtyard.
