RSK - Kell am See Secondary School

Situation
The challenge in the competition is to preserve the functions and the inventory. However, the planned new school building should strengthen the existing buildings and integrate or supplement their functions.

The existing school building from 1958/59 contains administrative units and functional rooms on the two upper and one lower floors. A single-storey pavilion, transverse to the school building, with a covered break area, restroom facility and auditorium/music room, provides sheltered access to the existing school building. The multipurpose and sports hall from 1977 is barely pedestrian friendly for pupils and teachers. For the citizens, the building is a cultural meeting place and center with events and exhibitions.

Room program and functional sequences

Access and way to school:
The bus access road, the Kiss & Go parking spaces and the parking area for the disabled will face the part of the street where the school is located. The pedestrian access, as well as the student waiting area will be separated from the flowing and stationary traffic without the need for a crossing. 10 covered bicycle parking spaces will be arranged next to the sheltered bus stop area. The bicycles are already directed onto the sidewalk before before the priority in traffic of the busroute. Hereby a separation of traffic flows and concomitantly a danger reduction is achieved. The generous dimensioning of the waiting area as a pergola (steel-wood construction) with accommodation options also increases pupil safety.: Town House, flanking the street

Access and entrance:
The entrance is through the schoolyard via the main access, which is clearly visible and barrier-free. Adjacent to this, the school building (old stock) and the new building with airspace and development are linked for easy orientation. The naturally illuminated and glas-covered atrium has the function of mediating between the building levels as well as providing access to the sports hall. The pupils reach the corresponding event rooms simply and weather protected by a short distance. In the case of long breaks, in rainy weather or for related events the ground floor level can be supplemented or separated by opening the sliding partitions of the auditorium. The airspace thus forms the multifunctional joint between old and new or above and below. Generous entrances, voids, openings and windows create visual references and thus strengthen the perception of the surrounding environment. The entrances and exits positioned on the two long sides allow free and controlled access to the sports facilities and open spaces.

Construction concept / Material / Energy / Costs
The supplementary building is based on the local timber construction without subordinating itself to it. The construction principle is a modern and high quality timber modular construction for school buildings. Among other things, this includes a very good cost efficiency and optimized construction-time planning. The main constructions are planned in energy-optimized timber frame construction. The inner surfaces are executed in wood, so that a sensory and haptic experience with the material is noticeable everywhere. The roof construction is a simple and cost-effective nail beam construction, which are prefabricated in elements and placed or rather attached to the module construction. As in the interior, the external facade is made of wood. However, here it is sustainably pre-patinated and designed as an easy-to-clean board and forend facade. This approved construction method allows a customized and high-quality production without functional and building physical restrictions. Due to the nearby forest management, this construction method is CO2 neutral, renewable and environmentally friendly. Energetically the summer and winter heat insulation is fulfilled by the efficient timber construction. A passive house standard is possible.
